Between practice schedules, roster paperwork, and field permits, uniforms can slide to the bottom of the list. If you’re a coach or team organizer juggling back-to-school season, here’s your checklist to make sure gear is handled before anything else competes for your attention.
1. Confirm your roster count
Final numbers shift right up until the first practice. Before you order, lock in:
- Confirmed players plus a buffer for late signups
- Anticipated size exchanges (younger age groups especially)
- Coach and staff sizing, if they’re suiting up too
Ordering a few extra in common sizes now is almost always easier than a rush reorder in October.
2. Decide what’s changing and what’s staying the same
Not every season means a full redesign. Figure out where you actually need action:
- New team or new sponsor? Time for a full custom kit
- Returning program? Check if you just need a refresh or a fill-in order
- Multi-sport athletes? Make sure gear doesn’t overlap or conflict across seasons
3. Lock your design before the calendar gets tight
Custom uniforms take production time, and back-to-school is peak season across the industry. The earlier your design is finalized, the more breathing room you have.
- Finalize colors, logos, and numbering now
- Get sign-off from your club or league if approval is required
- Build in lead time for proofing and revisions
4. Don’t forget the gear around the uniform
Jerseys get the attention, but the supporting gear is what actually gets a team through the season:
- Practice gear and pinnies
- Warm-ups and spirit wear
- Bags, socks, and other accessories players tend to forget on their own
5. Set your ordering and distribution timeline
A great uniform order doesn’t help anyone if it shows up after the first game. Map out:
- Order deadline based on your production timeline
- Distribution plan — team pickup, mailed to parents, or handed out at practice
- A buffer week before Week One in case anything needs adjusting
